Mindfulness Meditation -- by Jane Forrington
There is a Buddhist saying...
that goes something like "Be here with what you are doing or you will miss most of your life." I’ve had this saying posted on my fridge for over a decade now and I’m constantly grateful for the reminder. I’m even more grateful though for my mindfulness meditation practice. Being present or "being where you are," is much easier with the skills provided by mindfulness exercises.
The Jungle of Life
Without mindfulness, the jungle of life gets too busy and quickly grows over with irrelevant and unsatisfying activities, thoughts and habits. Even worse for me is that if my practice stops I often find myself feeling like I should be doing (or being!) even more of the things that make me feel dissatisfied.
The Ordinary is the Way
Nothing unhealthy about wanting to improve, expand, grow – indeed this is likely the evolutionary quality of life pouring through us. It's the lack of deep fulfillment in the ordinary that is a cause of deep suffering. But ironically, the ordinary IS the way. Mindfulness exercises and mindfulness training are like discerning pathways through this jungle of ordinary and I can't think for one second that there's anything wrong with making the journey easier.
Deep Awareness of our True Nature
What hasn't been mentioned yet is that mindful meditation can ultimately lead us to a much deeper awareness of our true nature. This is a path that is waiting for everyone. Some are on it without knowing it, some are searching, some are lost but hopeful...some are lost but terrified –not understanding they can never be too out of touch and that it is our heritage. It is who we are. That's the good news.
It is a Deep Fix
The not so good news is that there might need to be significant effort involved in cultivating this awareness, in deepening our understanding, in cutting through that jungle of unconscious ordinary. Significant effort but time well spent. As a teacher of mine has always said, “It is not a quick fix but it is a deep fix.” I now know this to be true.
